What Are We Feeding Our Pets?
MSG * BHA * BHT * & EQ

Monosodium glutamate (MSG) is a flavor enhancer derived from the fermentation of molasses. MSG’s adverse affects with some people. A few symptoms include: headaches, nausea, dizziness, dry skin, weight gain, lethargy, Endocrine disorders; conditions such as gross obesity, stunted growth, learning disabilities, and behavior disorders. Maybe that’s why MSG is not permitted in foods for infants and young children.

With this in mind and FDA reports, some veterinarians commonly recommend putting MSG on a dog’s food if they are stool eaters. This has worked but not recommended with these reactions. If your dog has this problem, Digestive Enzymes may help the digestive deficiency causing it.

Butylated Hydroxy-Anisole (BHA) A petroleum derivative, BHA can provoke an allergic reaction in some people, may trigger hyperactivity and other intolerances; serious concerns over carcinogenicity and estrogenic effects, in large doses caused tumors in lab animals. It was banned in Japan in 1958, official committees of experts recommended that it be banned in the UK, however due to industry pressure it was not banned. BHA is used in skin care products, with labels stating to avoid using on infants and children.

Butylated Hydroxyl Toluene (BHT) BHT is a petroleum derivative has been associated with stomach and urinary cancer and McDonald's eliminated BHT from their US products in 1986.

Ethoxyquin (EQ) EQ was used as a rubber stabilizer and has also been effective as an insecticide and a pesticide. Ethoxyquin was originally approved by the FDA as a grain preservative intended for animals raised to be killed for food, and it was to be used no longer than 2 years, But it is not used as a preservative for HUMAN foods. Contradictory? Yes! The concern of the safety of feeding it to dogs that live 12 to 17 years has brought the FDA, Center for Veterinary Medicine (CVA) to request that Ethoxyquin levels be reduced in dog foods. These are preservatives to prevent the fat in foods from going bad. These preservatives also have been implicated in spleen, liver, kidney problems, birth and brain defects, and behavior problems, allergic reactions, baldness and increased cholesterol levels. In the United States Pet and Grocery stores provide an array of foods and treats, for humans and pets, that have been banned in other countries!

Hey, you can’t avoid everything, but you can practice moderation. So, if you are currently poisoning your pet with these preservatives, you may want to think about a cooked diet, raw diet or freeze dried food to help detoxify their system. Regardless whether a diet is implemented short or long term could be the key to a healthier life. As always, consult your veterinarian before trying any suggestions.
