Patience & Motor Oil Poisoning

The Story Of A Little Girl & A Home Remedy

Patience’s & Carolina's arival:

Patience is 1 ½ years old and her pup Carolina is 2months. They are Shih Tzu Mixes. a volunteer, Annette, picked them up from the owner who sold the other 7 puppies before they were old enough to we weaned! When Annette arrived the people just bathed Patience but she smelled and her breathing was off. Turns out Patience had fleas/skin rash and was biting her skin so the people PUT MOTER OIL ON HER! This is a home remedy myth to treat mange and other skin problems. Patience’s people put on the surrender form their reason for giving these two up is because they had “no room”! Aaaah maybe they should have thought about that before the puppies!

She started a cough with varied breathing… went to the vet and they gave her fluids… They said she needed a blood transfusion and more for her other issues that they could not administer on a holiday weekend. So she went right to the emergency vet and there she was diagnosed with pneumonia and her kidney levels are not good! She will need to be in the hospital for a week in order to turn her around! We are begging for your prayers and asking for donations to help with her vet bill that hit $833 today! Tuesday she will switch hospitals and need 24 hour vet care for a week, before she can come back to foster care. Donations can be done via Pay Pal on our website or checks can be mailed to:

Thanks so much!

24 hours later her foster mom shares:

Every day pet rescuers battle to save lives and aid the rescue cause. We diligently promote our cherished foster pets and strive to educate people on healthy pet partnerships. Our passion for rescue consumes us as their is always some way to help a pet in need. Sadly sometimes our help is too late. Sometimes a pets quality of life of could have been easily and inexpensively elevated, by their people before it becomes a serious problem. Unfortunately for our Patience their motor oil choice was our and her loss!

Precious Patience, we love you!

A couple days later her foster mom, Stacy, replies to the concerned emails wanting “justice” for Patience with her previous owners:

Blessings, I have been processing the incident with your replies concerning reporting her people for neglect. Since I saw Patience after her last breath, I have harsh feelings and anger towards her people, BUT Annett shared some rational input with me that helped me see differently;

  • The family did not do it intentionally.
  • They had heard it worked and trusted the people they confided in.
  • The woman did call Annette twice to check on Patience and when she heard Patience was in the emergency she did cry heavily and sounded to have remorse.

Yes it was ignorant from our perspective because we have different understanding and upbringing, BUT it was not malicious and they will have to live with the outcome forever. So now I feel the same as Annette and rather not have that anger. There are so many other concerns in rescue this is best left to educate others.

None of us will ever forget Patiance story. I will never forget her soft kisses nor the horrible after math I saw. The vet did warn me before I went to tell her she was loved, but what I saw was not expected.

We deeply appreciate your concern, kind words and your donations to go towards her vetting. We did get $55 reimbursed but had to pay the $833 before they treated her.

THANKS SO MUCH AGAIN!!!

AHHHHH tears! I don’t want to end on a sad note, SO here is some JOY- Her baby we named Carolina because of this young girl who cared enough to make a difference in our rescue cause.

So what do you need to know and share with all your pet loving friends, everyone in your address book and social networks?

What is mange? Mange is a chronic skin disease caused by parasitic mites and characterized by skin lesions, itching, and loss of hair.

What's the best treatment for mange? Treatment for mange should be overseen by a licensed veterinarian. The veterinarian may prescribe various prescriptions, shampoos and antibiotics depending on the type of mange.

Why do some people use motor oil? Misinformation abounds and some folks are willing to try untested 'home remedies' that result in making the dog miserable and can kill the dog. Motor oil adds to the dogs discomfort by causing rashes on the skin and increases the dog's susceptibility to infection. Dogs absorb hydrocarbons from the oil through the skin and may lick the motor oil; ingestion can result in kidney and/or liver damage. In Patience case, death.

Please tell people what happened to my Mommy so it doesn't happen again!
