Joey"s Story

Florida's Get A Life Pet Rescue's Joey Was Dumped By His Adopter At An Austin Texas High Kill Shelter!

Joey was bought at a Boca pet store, kept up to date with vaccines, pampered till he was eight.  He was given to us because he bit a child that hugged him while he was sleeping. Though the family knew Joey was just startled and reacted they did not want to take any chances.

He lived with his GALPR foster mom, free run of the house, slept with her and the other dogs. He loved to be near her. His favorite place was in her face on the computer desk for kisses! He never even turned his head to nip. “He gave the best hugs!” she said. We adopted him to a couple in their late forties, no children, work from home and animal rights activists!

They take him on a road trip/ “vacation” to Texas. She went to get him to move while he was sleeping and he bit her! From then on there were a series of events, that started with leaving him in a Wal-Mart parking lot, and now he sits in a wet concrete run waiting for help 1,330 miles away from those of us who LOVE him!

Get a Life Pet Rescue volunteers scramble for help to keep him alive and to find transport back to Ft. Lauderdale! His foster mom, Stacy puts out a plea for help;

“Thousands of dogs sit in high kill shelters every day, they all have names and stories. They all ended up there due to the negligence of their people or circumstance. None deserve to die but due to space they are euthanized regardless of age or health. Joey is no different but he is our boy, my foster kid and some lucky person's pet companion. I am begging if you know anyone that just may be traveling from Texas to Georgia or Florida please have them contact us.”

GALPR volunteers step up and offer ways they can contribute to bring Joey home! A volunteer, Linda, offered to fly over and drive back with him! This was huge on her part to take time away from her family to safely bring our boy home. Unfortunately that plan did not work out just like all the other ones. In the mean time Wee Rescue in Austin puts a rescue hold on Joey to save his life!

Get A Life Pet Rescue takes time with every dog during their mental and physical rehabilitation. Our sponsor page shares some of our special needs dogs that have all found eternal homes. We could have never imagined this situation, especially with this boy, Joey! His reason for being given up was posted in his adoption bio, discussed in the phone & home interviews and they signed a bite waiver regarding his previous incident with his original owner! These adopters knew he may get upset if startled but their “love” was disposable.

The adopters never notified GALPR that they had a problem, much less that they were dropping him off in another state! After talking with them, we learned that their vacation plans had changed due to family illness and did not feel Joey was enjoying being on the road. They felt it was better to dump him rather than contact us for help! We do have to believe that Joey bit her and understand that there is more to the story. Regardless if they just didn’t want Joey around or not, he did not deserve this treatment.

However, Joey’s story and the way his people dumped him reached the hearts of two other rescues in the surrounding Austin area! Lone Star Shih Tzu and Lhasa Apso Rescue and Small Chance Rescue both offered their connections and support in getting Joey home.

With all the correspondences our  volunteers compiled, the best way to get Joey back to us (in-between all the tropical storms/hurricanes) was to fly him on pet friendly Continental, in air conditioned cargo. This took some time for us to all agree, but after draining all other possibilities we booked a flight! Bamse's (an adopted special needs Shih Tzu) family offered to sponsor his transport! THEN we had to find a volunteer to help get him to the airport!!! We asked our three Austin rescue friends and they emailed their volunteers!

It was unbelievable, some people actually responded to help! We were so elated till flight times became an issue and two days of arranging didn’t get us anywhere. We subsequently received an email from Gloria with Wee Rescue that said that she would rearrange her schedule to accommodate Joey’s flight! YES!!! It's on now baby, the sun is shining and Gustav, Hanna,  or Ike (hurricanes) can’t dim Joey’s  glow!

His release date has come and Joey is transferred to a boarding facility now till he can catch a pet friendly flight to Ft. Lauderdale.

JOEY'S ARIVAL!

Through tons of emails, calls and determination, we finally were able to get Joey home!

MANY BLESSINGS TO ALL WHO AIDED IN JOEY'S JOURNEY

TO HIS AUSTIN ANGEL GLORIA & BAMSE'S FAMILY

WE CAN NOT THANK YOU ENOUGH!!!

Please check back for updates on Joey's journey to his eternal home!

Joey's first night back in his foster home! Fresh, Fed & Fatigued!

Mod Dog Spa & Boutique Boca, welcomed Joey home with a spa treatment like a Rock Star! He even got a rocker neckerchief!

We are very grateful to Kim and the Mod Dog crew for all their rescue efforts including adopting three of our Shih Tzus!!!

Incredible! With out even being posted for adoption Joey’s story reached caring people wanting to know more and to adopt Joey! While we were at Mod Dog for grooming Kim mentioned a gentleman who wanted to adopt one of her Shih Tzu foster dogs that Kim ended up adopting! Heee, Hee! While we were chatting about it one of the groomers called the guy and they were at the boutique in 15 minutes! We went for a short walk with Joey and they wanted to know the next steps for adoption! We went along with the flow and did a home visit where they wanted to adopt him instantly! Joey’s foster mom was not prepared emotionally or with his adoption packet. She did not want to rush into any adoption especially after what Joey had been through, so she asked for them to read his story online and think more about his adoption. The next day they called wanting Joey!!! His foster mom said she could bring a couple other dogs that could be a possible match as well. They replied, “We have told our friends and family and emailed his story telling everyone we are going to adopt Joey! We only want Joey!” So Joey went back to his eternal home where they had his essentials and a plush doggy bed waiting for him! Now that’s divine order, compassion and networking all composed for one dynamic life called JOEY!!!

We are so grateful to the Mod Dog staff for all their rescue efforts and ANOTHER adoption!

ANOTHER HAPPY TAIL THE END
