Baxter Overcomes A Breeders Abuse & Neglect!

Baxter was a breeder’s dog and surrendered to rescue because he would not breed. He was crated for four years (since birth) with several other Chihuahuas. They fought a lot because the dogs were crammed together and there was very little food. Baxter has scars on his eyes from these fights and they left him traumatized! When he first came into our foster care he was fearful beyond any other foster dog! Usually the dogs will be nippy or even aggressive, but Baxter had no emotions at all and just sat comatose staring into space! It was like he was spiritless. If touched by a human he would tense up and his eyes would bulge with redness! He was safest in a play pen alone because the other dogs and household noises freaked him out. He started on the Flower Essences “Star of Bethlehem” and his foster mom showed him gentle affection as well as carried him around. In time he began to trust and relax. In the third week of the Flower essences Baxter was able to walk around the house on a leash for short periods of time allowing him to become comfortable in a house and with other dogs. If his foster mom let go of the leash he would try to hide.

In a little over a month Baxter was running free in the house with out neither any leash nor worries! Then the same process started for play and potty time in the yard. Even though Baxter was aloud to walk freely with out ever being crated he would still take a few steps and circle as if he was still confined to a crate and did not have space to move around. His mind had been conditioned to circle for exercise, since that was the only movement he was able to do at the breeders.

Since Baxter is so cute, with rare long hair and tiny, he received a lot of applications and went on several home visits but never was adopted, because the people did not understand the time and care he would need to become adjusted in a new home, they thought they could handle him till they saw his behaviors in person!  Over time he began to act more like a dog and not a stuffed toy! After five months of rehabilitation and searching for the best home, Baxter was adopted to a 98 pound white German Sheppard named Max, who was also abused and rescued!

For Baxter LIFE BAGAN AT THE AGE OF FOUR!!!

After two years of being adopted, Baxter’s family went out of town and his foster mom was able to baby sit him. She could not believe this chunky, dancing, playful boy was once comatose from fear, neglect and abuse! Below is a short video sharing how two years of compassion and free run in his home, still did not recondition Baxter’s behavior of circling, as his breeding doggy parents probably did they were born into life in a crate!

Update from his Mom 3 years after adoption: "He is such a character - so much personality - it's hard to believe he was semi-comatose at one time. He still does his circles (we call him "Right Turn Baxter because he never turns left), but not nearly as much as he used to. He can go for a 1/4 mile walk and only do a circle 2 or 3 times. He used to do a circle every 2-3 steps!"
